Why Blog About Quantcast?

OK, first post. I'm still working out my rationale for this but basically it comes down my appreciation of Quantcast making the first serious attempt to provide open, reliable web audience metrics. All the various toolbar, panel and ISP metrics systems have deep biases that provide flawed results. As an example: Alexa (which Quantcast relies upon for a portion of its non-tracker site data) is terrible because it's subject to insane levels of manipulation by site owners' promotional efforts.

Quantcast's approach actually works - from my understanding of the methodology, it's more reliable than any other 'open' system out there. Also, Quantcast shares data with the people who run the sites, giving useful demographic and other visitor stats.

So my intent here is to cover Quantcast news, explain why Quantcast practices are good or bad to people who may not understand web metrics, and also to show site owners how they can best apply Quantcast tools to maximize visitors and revenue. Also, if Quantcast's exployees know they're being scrutinized by someone who values the integrity of their approach, they're probably more likely to live up to their own ideals. (I think what they're doing is great and I would like to see them keep doing it.)

I have no contact or relationship with Quantcast, so there's little or no chance of conflict.
